Customs Technology Raises Security and Safety Concerns

The increasing adoption of digital technology by governments in screening travelers has some academics and civil liberties advocates ringing the alarm. So reports The Financial Times.

For instance, would-be visitors to the United States are now required to disclose details about their social media profiles, while other efforts around the world include biometric recognition in airports and at borders.

Some civil rights advocates warned that forcing travelers to share information about their social media identities could have a chilling effect on free speech. They also cautioned that the monitoring technologies being used are flawed and vulnerable to hackers.
