WhatsApp Sues Indian Government Over 'Mass Surveillance'

WhatsApp has filed a lawsuit in India, aiming to stop new regulations that the Facebook-owned messaging service claimed could lead to “mass surveillance.” So reports TechCrunch.

whatsapp 2170427 640The lawsuit in the High Court of Delhi argues that the government’s new “traceability” rule, which would force tech companies to identify the senders of private messages, runs afoul of privacy rights.

In a blog post, WhatsApp contends that “a government that chooses to mandate traceability is effectively mandating a new form of mass surveillance.”
