GEDMatch Breach Shows Genealogical Cybersecurity Risks

A recent data breach of GEDmatch, a popular genealogy site also often used by law enforcement, has privacy experts worried. So reports The New York Times.

family tree 295298 640The breach led users to have DNA matches with fake users and also forced all of the site’s roughly 1 million users to opt in to helping law enforcement, even if they had previously opted out.

Scientists said the incident shows the potential problems if companies that store genealogical data fail to implement proper security measures.
