New York Watchdog Cautions About 'Widespread Cybercrime'

The New York State Department of Financial Services has warned insurance companies that it’s tracking a “widespread cybercrime campaign” in which hackers are pilfering COVID-19 relief. So reports Law360.

covid 19 4922384 640smallThe regulator said in a press release that it has heard of efforts to access consumers’ sensitive information from sites that provide auto insurance rate quotes and then use that to apply for fraudulent pandemic and unemployment benefits.

A cyber fraud alert from the agency to the insurance industry reads, “DFS urges all regulated entities with Instant Quote Websites to immediately review those websites for evidence of hacking.”
