Pressures on Cybersecurity Pros Aren’t Easing, Surveys Suggest

Recently reissued results from a spate of surveys indicate that the challenges for cybersecurity professionals remain intense.

The HP Wolf Security Rebellions & Rejections study is based on a global YouGov online survey of more than 8,000 office workers who changed to work from home after COVID-19 hit as well as a global study of 1,100 “IT decision makers” conducted by Toluna, a research firm.

The study also found signs that remote workers are chafing at cybersecurity protocols. Among younger workers between 18 and 24 years old, 48% of respondents said they view security tools as a hindrance, with almost 31% trying to get around security measures to meet their work deadlines. Ian Pratt, global head of security for personal systems at HP Inc., said, “The fact that workers are actively circumventing security should be a worry for any CISO—this is how breaches can be born.”

Meanwhile, also as reported by Security Magazine, a survey by IT provider Sungard Availability Services found that just 21% of companies are fully confident that their infrastructure security can sustain remote work over the long haul. The survey included responses from 200 North American IT, information security, HR and operations leaders at the director level and above, representing seven industries, from June 24 to August 1.

Elsewhere, as VentureBeat reports, a new survey by cybersecurity firm Opswat has found that just 8% of organizations with web apps for uploading files implement enough cybersecurity measures to prevent malware and cyber attacks.

The survey included responses from more than 300 participants, all IT security pros directly in charge of web apps handling at least 500 daily file uploads for organizations with 250 or more employees.
