Facebook to Pay $550M in Facial-recognition Settlement

Facebook has announced a $550 million settlement in a 2015 class action lawsuit that claimed the social-media giant’s facial recognition tools violated Illinois state law. So reports Recode.

facebook 2429746 640 smallFacebook had long claimed that the tools, launched in 2010, did not run afoul of Illinois’ Biometrics Information Privacy Act. Enacted in 2008, Illinois’s biometrics privacy law is one of the strictest measures of its kind nationwide.

Facebook has eliminated its photo tag suggestions tool since a federal appeals court denied its request to toss the complaint in August 2019. The U.S. Supreme Court recently rejected another appeal by Facebook. The settlement still awaits a judge’s approval.
