Apple, EU Phone-scan Plans Draw Rebuke from Security Experts  

Apple’s proposal to scan phones for images of child sexual abuse and apparent European Union consideration of a similar program that would also check for imagery have come under fire from more than a dozen cybersecurity experts. So reports The New York Times.

app cab hand 34239The researchers said in a 48-page study that the plans employed “dangerous technology” that could encourage governments to spy on their citizens. Apple recently said it would pause its initiative following an uproar from privacy advocates.

Ross Anderson, a professor of security engineering at the University of Cambridge, said the group was publishing its conclusions because “expansion of the surveillance powers of the state really is passing a red line.”
