WhatsApp Fined $267M Under EU Data Protection Rules  

The European Union’s leading privacy watchdog has fined WhatsApp €225 million (about $267 million) for running afoul of Europe’s data protection rule framework. So reports TechCrunch.

gdpr 3285252 1920Ireland’s Data Protection Commission, in a 266-page decision, found that the Facebook-owned messaging service fell short of the requirements under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which came into force in 2018.

WhatsApp, which plans to appeal, said in a statement, “We disagree with the decision today regarding the transparency we provided to people in 2018 and the penalties are entirely disproportionate.”
