Oil Companies Step Up Cybersecurity After Pemex Incident

U.S. oil companies with business in Mexico are ramping up their cybersecurity procedures following reports of ransomware-induced outages at Mexico’s state-owned oil giant, Pemex. So reports the Houston Chronicle.

Mexican media outlets recently reported that Pemex turned off all of the computers at its Mexico City headquarters as a preventative measure after an attack by hackers demanding 860 bitcoins, valued at roughly $6 million.

Pemex has denied that the incidents took place and did not respond to the Chronicle, but foreign oil companies that work with Pemex are reportedly taking added precautions, such as blocking Pemex emails.
