Capital One Data Breach Affects 100 Million, Suspect Arrested

Capital One has confirmed a massive data breach that exposed the personal data of 100 million people and led to the arrest of an alleged hacker. So reports The New York Times.

Federal prosecutors in Seattle on July 29 charged Paige Thompson, a 33-year-old software engineer, with computer fraud and abuse. According to court documents and a statement by Capital One, the breach allowed Thompson to obtain 140,000 Social Security numbers and 80,000 bank account numbers, among other sensitive information.

Thompson’s lawyer did not immediately respond to the Times’ request for comment.
